Weekly News w/c 25.03.19

This week, we did a hot seating activity for our English on Monday.  We worked with a partner to write questions that we would like to ask Beegu, the alien in our story.  We took it in turns to take on the role of Beegu and answer the questions as we thought she might do.

In our second English lesson, we typed emails to Beegu using the laptops.  This is the first time we have used these, so there was a lot of new learning taking place in addition to using our writing skills.

For our maths, we have continued measuring.  We worked in our colour groups to measure the court on the playground using non standard and standard units.  We used things like our feet or our bodies to measure, but agreed these were not as accurate as using metres and centimetres.

It was lovely to see so many of the children at the disco tonight showing off their wonderful moves.  Congratulations to all of those who won prizes, including Elliot, Theo, Jamie and Darcie.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday at 9am for our maths cafe.

Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team

Weekly News w/c 18.03.19

On Monday, we wrote descriptions of Beegu's friend that we had made out of clay last week.  We challenged ourselves to add the conjunctions 'because' and 'and' to make our sentences longer and add more information.

On Tuesday, we wrote about Beegu herself using repetition and we even tried adding a simile or two to make our writing even better.

This is Beegu.

In maths we have continued our measuring topic.  We investigated some of the crash landing materials to find out how big they were.  We have learnt how to measure in non-standard units using objects such as cubes and lolly sticks and many of us challenged ourselves to use a ruler to measure in centimetres.

On Friday, we enjoyed sharing our home learning activities in our colour groups.  We have brought our books home again today so that we can complete the final tasks ready for the last week of term.

Finally, we have been working hard to learn our lines, songs and Beegu's story for this afternoon's assembly.  We hope that you enjoyed finding out about our Moon Zoom topic and would like to thank you all for coming to support us.  We are sure you'll agree the children were amazing!

Some children did not remember their spelling books today, so just in case you need them, the words tgo practise this week are:
push
pull
full
ask

Notes and Reminders

Next Friday the children will have their second spelling test, challenging them to remember 10 of the tricky words they have been practising.
Please ensure reading record and spelling books are in book bags every day.

Weekly News w/c 11.03.19

On Monday, in maths we looked at all the ways that we could make 10.  We thought of lots of different ways, including:
  • number bonds
  • subtraction facts
  • numicon shapes
  • 10 drawings
  • written in words
  • using bead strings
On Tuesday, we read more of Beegu’s story.  We thought about how she feels and what we already knew about her character.  We recognised that her ears expressed her emotions and created an emotional timeline for her.  We have started learning the story of Beegu using Talk for Writing with actions ready for our assembly next week - ask us to show you!

Last week we thought about what Beegu’s planet would look like and this week we used chalks to create colourful planet pictures.

They make a lovely, colourful display as you can see!

We have also started learning about measurement in maths.  We have been using the vocabulary of 'longer/shorter, taller/smaller'  and 'longest/shortest, tallest/smallest' to describe and compare the length and height of objects.

Finally, we have been practising hard for next week's Year 1 assembly and have brought home the words that we are saying.  Please help us to learn these by practising with us at home.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday at 2pm for our Moon Zoom Assembly!

Reminders:
Please can the children have their reading record and their spelling book in their book bag each day.

Weekly News w/c 25.02.19

On Wednesday, we launched our new Power of Reading book by looking at a picture of the main character and writing similes about them.

"...as big as a building" - Ru
"...as fat as a hippo" - Summer
"...yellow like a lemon" - Riley

Today, we looked at some of the debris from the alien crash landing site and investigated what we thought the items were made of and their properties.

Reminders and Notes:
In the mornings. please can you say goodbye to your child at the blue door or in the library to encourage them to be more independent.

Next Thursday is World Book Day.  We have invited the children to come in dressed as a favourite book character.  We would also love to have our own book club during the day so please could children also bring a book to share and talk about with their friends.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend.
