Year 1 Home Learning (week commencing 1st June)

Hello everyone and welcome to a new half term of learning.  We hope you managed to enjoy some family time over half term and look forward to seeing more of the children’s wonderful learning over the coming weeks.

This half term our topic is called Splendid Skies.  This is a Science/Geography focussed topic where we will be learning about the 4 seasons and seasonal/daily weather patterns.  We have a new Power of Reading book to use for our English, which will be revealed bit by bit just like last time.

Please find below the tasks for next week.

Maths

This week, White Rose are again repeating the lessons on measurement that we completed earlier in the lockdown.  We are therefore following the alternative plan for this week, looking at 3D and 2D shape.  Links for each lesson’s video and worksheets can be found below.

Monday - Can you sort 3D shapes?                                               Worksheet

Tuesday - Can you recognise and name 2D shapes?                      Worksheet

Wednesday - Can you sort 2D shapes?                                         Worksheet

Thursday - Can you continue patterns with 2D and 3D shapes?  Worksheet

Friday - Can you complete the Friday Maths Challenge?
Go to: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/, select Week 6 (w/c 1st June).

Consolidate this learning with practical activities, such as:
·        3D shape song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cg-Uc556-Q
·        2D shape song - https://vimeo.com/323186255
·        Playing games such as Shape Spin, Sunny Shapes and Bar-B-Shapes on Education City.

English

All the resources and pictures for this week’s English lessons can be found on this PowerPoint.  Further links to it are also on the relevant days below.

Monday – Can you draw on what you already know, background information and vocabulary to respond to the illustration?

Use this PowerPoint to look at the pictures of different weather.  Discuss the different types of weather and select which one you like best explaining why.  For example: “I like it when the weather is… because…”

Think about this: What would happen if the sun shone every day and it never rained? Use your experience of weather, seasons, holidays abroad etc. to consider your answer.
Now look at the picture from the first page of our new book (.  What do you notice? Have you seen anywhere like this before?

Write a list of vocabulary that comes to mind when you view this picture.
Once completed explain that this story is set in Kenya, Africa.  You may wish to locate Kenya on a world map, globe or on Google Earth.

Tuesday – Handwriting

These words are taken from the Phase 2 to 5 High Frequency words list.
Write each word 3 times using your best pre-cursive handwriting.

children    then    look    just    make    off

The school also subscribes to a handwriting package called Letterjoin, which you can access at home using these login details.

Wednesday – Can you identify nouns and write noun phrases?

Today we focus on our grammar knowledge – learning about nouns and noun phrases.
Look at the images of Kenya and Kenyan villages from slide 11 of this week’s PowerPoint.

Work through the slides to remind the children what a noun is (a person, place or object).  We have done a little bit about this before so hopefully they will remember!  Can they verbally list all the nouns in the pictures?
Explain that when we add an adjective (a describing word) in front of a noun it becomes a ‘noun phrase’.

Have a go at saying some noun phrases orally before writing a list of noun phrases for the Kenyan picture.  For example: ‘An orange sun.’ or, even better, ‘A gleaming orange sun.’

For an extra challenge use a conjunction to make your sentence longer: ‘I can see a brown hut and a crackling fire.”

Thursday - Phonics

Complete the phoneme spotter for the alternative ways of spelling the ‘ai’ phoneme: ai, ay, a_e.

Friday – Can you make predictions about what might happen?

Look at the front cover of our new book (from 22 of the PowerPoint) and read the title.  What do you think the story might be about?  You may wish to write your prediction.

Watch the story being read at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm5D7Mrxm5o
After watching the story identify the main characters.  What are their names?  How might they feel at different points in the story?

Science

Can you identify the four seasons and consider how weather changes in each season?

Do you already know the 4 seasons?  Can you name them in order?

Read, with your grown-up, this story called ‘Seren’s Seasons’.

Can you fill a suitcase with appropriate clothes, footwear and accessories for each season?
Or alternatively, you could make up a real suitcase with clothes for each season!

Geography

Can you identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK?

Identify the current season and observe the weather on a daily basis.  Ask and answer questions about the weather, such as 'Is this weather typical of the season?  How is the weather the same or different to yesterday or the day before?'

Look at the PowerPoint showing different weather symbols.

Create simple weather symbols using card, coloured pens and pencils.  You could make a weather chart to have up in your house and change the symbol each day to show what the weather is like.

Computing - Internet Safety

Can you learn about staying safe on the internet?

Go to https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/Support-tools/home-activity-worksheets/5-7s/ and select Home Activity Pack 2.  The storybook revisits the previous video you watched about sharing pictures online.  This will give you two activities about staying safe online, including a link to a short, age-appropriate video and song.

Daily Tasks

Phonics - using Letters and Sounds daily live phonics lessons.  Sessions take place Monday-Friday at 10.30am for Year 1 and at 11am for children who may need a little extra help with their sounds and blending.  Alternatively, to practise specific sounds, you could use the Alphablocks videos online or select Phonics Play games, such as Buried Treasure or Acorn Adventures for that sound.

Year 1 Home Learning (week commencing 18th May)

Thank you once again for all your emails, photos and videos, it is lovely to see all the amazing learning the children have been doing.

Please find below the tasks for next week.

Maths

This week, White Rose are repeating lessons on measurement that we completed earlier in the lockdown.  We are therefore introducing money as our topic for this week.  This presentation covers the lessons from Monday to Thursday and there are some useful videos for the first two lessons.  It would be helpful if could you have a selection of coins available for children to hold and play with, so they become more used to handling money.

Monday - Can you recognise and compare British coins?              Worksheet
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs8F_g3MGtM   (link also on presentation)

Tuesday - Can you recognise and compare British bank notes?   Worksheet
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DDI_RlZB0c   (link also on presentation)

Wednesday - Can you count in coins?                                              Worksheet

Thursday - Can you solve problems involving money?
Today’s questions focus on reasoning and problem solving based on this week’s learning.  (The questions can also be found on the final 2 slides of the presentation)

Friday - Can you complete the Friday Maths Challenge?
Go to: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/, select Week 5 (w/c 18th May).

Consolidate this learning with practical activities, such as:
·        playing the Toy Shop money game:
·        playing some of the money games in the homework section on Education City.
·        practising making different amounts of money using coins and notes.
·        using wax crayons to make rubbings of different coins
·        counting assorted coins to work out the total.

English

Monday - Can you use your story map to write your own woodland story?

To remind children of the Wild story, re-watch the video of the author reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9mamhbLZAE.  Ask children to use their story map from last week to write their own woodland story.  Discuss how they could start the story.  Wild starts with the line “No one knew how she came to the woods, but all knew it was right.”  Encourage children to go into as much detail as possible to develop their story.  Can they add descriptions to add interest, e.g. ‘the fox’ becomes ‘the cunning, red fox’?

This activity could be done as a simple book with a sentence and illustration on each page.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21qi9ZcQVto

Tuesday - Handwriting

These words are taken from the Phase 2 to 5 High Frequency words list.
Write each word 3 times using your best pre-cursive handwriting.

Mum   Dad   back   will   them   down

The school also subscribes to a handwriting package called Letterjoin, which you can access at home using these login details.

Wednesday - Can you find and organise facts about types of bear?

Introduce the idea of finding out more about one of the animals from the text that is the girl’s friend.  Explain to the children that this type of writing is called non-fiction, i.e. it is factual rather than made up.  This song helps explain the difference between fiction and non-fiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFbX-wFPvWo.

We are going to focus on the bear, who tucks her up on the first page.  Ask children what they already think they know about bears and what they would like to find out.
If you have a suitable non-fiction text at home, you could look at the features of a non-fiction text, e.g.
·        contents page - shows what’s in the book in number order.
·        index - in alphabetical order, useful to find specific information.
·        glossary - alphabetical list of terms used in the book with a definition.
·        photos with captions
·        heading and subheadings in different sized fonts.

Divide/fold a piece of paper into quarters and write the following headings in the four sections:
·        Different types of bears
·        Where bears live
·        What bears eat
·        What they look like

Model how to make notes under each heading using bullet points.

Suggested resources:
·        Bear fact cards
·        Bear fact sheet for adults

 Online resources
(a longer programme, but very informative and enjoyable)
https://www.kidzone.ws/lw/bears/facts.htm (lots of information, will require adult help)

Thursday - Phonics

Play Buried Treasure and sort the words into real and alien words.  Can you read the word and add the sound buttons too?

Friday - Can you create a fact file about a bear?

Ask children to pick their favourite type of bear from those they researched on Wednesday, e.g. a polar bear/brown bear etc.  Revisit facts written about their chosen bear, including where it lives, what it looks like, what it eats.  Can they remember what type of animal bears are?  Ask children to complete the fact file to share some of their facts.  Encourage them to write in full sentences using capital letters, finger spaces  and full stops.  Draw a picture in the box.

Science

Can you use your knowledge of animal body parts to create a new animal?

Look at the Animal Bodies presentation and discuss how some animal body parts are the same/different to our bodies, e.g. some animals have tails, gills, wings etc.  As per the slides, ask children to describe the different animals to a partner and identify the odd one out in the different groups.

Complete the Bizarre Beasts activity sheet to create their own animal.  Make it colourful!

Design and Technology

Can you create a healthy woodland picnic?

Create teeny tiny, healthy treats to serve at a tiny tea party for imaginary woodland creatures.  Work with an adult to prepare and make mini sandwiches and small fruity skewers on cocktail sticks.
Work safely and wash hands thoroughly before handling food.

Alternatively, children could make imaginary foods using play dough or modelling clay.

Practical resources
·        Ingredients and equipment for making tiny treats
·        Small cups and saucers
·        Play dough

Art

Can you create a woodland crown using natural materials?

Create a woodland crown out of natural materials and art/scrap materials.

Reading - a book/comic/Bug Club to develop reading skills.  We will allocate extra books on Bug Club when we notice you are getting low, or you can let us know when you email us.

Year 1 Home Learning (week commencing 11th May)

Thank you once again for all your emails, photos and videos, it is lovely to see all the amazing learning the children have been doing.

Please find below the tasks for next week.  (Sorry for any inconvenience caused by links not working Friday/Saturday, all are now up and running)

Maths

Select ‘Summer - Week 4’ (w/c 11th May).  Please watch one video each day and complete the linked activities.  To continue using the worksheets, you will need to click the link beside each objective, i.e. click on the word Monday to get Monday's worksheet.  Alternatively, you may prefer to try the BBC Bitesize activities.

Monday - Can you add by making 10?
Tuesday - Can you subtract numbers to 20?
Wednesday - Can you solve problems using addition and subtraction?
Thursday - Can you use compare addition and subtraction number sentences?
Friday - Can you complete the Friday Maths Challenge?

Consolidate this learning with practical activities, such as:
·        practising number bonds using songs such as:
·        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyK8iEO5-GI (number bonds to 10) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmLMU8BqyKw (number bonds to 20)
·        practising adding and subtracting using toys or any other resources around the home.
·        play some of the addition, subtraction and number bond games in the homework section on Education City.

English

Monday - Can you make a story map to re-tell the Wild story?

Watch the video of the author reading the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9mamhbLZAE.

Ask children to recap what happens in the story.  Is this how they thought the story would end?  Did they expect her to go back to the woods?  Look at the story map sheet and discuss any key points they may have missed.  Ask children to draw a picture in the large box to go with each piece of text from the book.

As they draw, ask children to think of words to describe how the character feels at that point, e.g. worried, anxious, upset, frustrated, etc.  Discuss how her emotions change throughout the story.  What is her highest point emotionally?  Her lowest? Write their ideas in the smaller box under each picture.  Try to think of ‘better’ words than the standard happy, sad, angry.  Explain to the children that words that mean the same are called synonyms.

Tuesday - Handwriting

Write each tricky word 3 times using your best pre-cursive handwriting.

she   her   was   looked   asked   could

Wednesday - Can you write thought bubbles to express the character’s feelings?

Re-watch the video of the author reading her story : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9mamhbLZAE.  Discuss the story with the children and ask:
·        Why do you think she destroyed the house?
·        Was this acceptable behaviour?
·        Was it understandable that she reacted in this way?
·        What did you like/dislike about the story?
·        Does it remind you of any other stories you have read/films you have seen?

Ask children to look back at the story map completed in Monday’s session.  Re-read the words they used to describe the character’s emotions at each stage.  Ask children to write a thought bubble for each picture to express how she is feeling and why, e.g. for the 6th picture (Enough is enough!), she might be thinking “I just want to scream!  I don’t like it here and I want to go back to my friends in the wood!”  Ask children to read out their thought bubbles.

Thursday - Phonics

Can you complete the Phonics I Spy game by finding things around your house with the different sounds in?  Now, use your sounds to try and spell the word.

Friday - Can you draw a story map for your own story?

Explain to children that Wild follows a similar pattern to the Claude stories that we read in school, i.e:
·        Beginning - the character(s) and setting are introduced
·        Middle - a problem occurs
·        End - the problem is resolved.

Ask children to imagine they are a child living in the woods like in the Wild story; and to think about the following:
·        Where do you live/sleep?
·        How do you feel about living here?
·        Who are your friends?
·        What adventures could you have?
·        What could go wrong?
·        How does the problem get fixed?

Ask children to create their own story map to show the beginning, middle and end of their story.  They can draw pictures, write words to summarise the story or use a combination of words and pictures.  Ask them to re-tell their story using their pictures as a prompt.

Science

Can you sort the animals into groups?

Look at the animal cards (just use cards 1-5) to find out about the five main vertebrate groups (mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds) and their features.  Discuss questions such as:
·        What is your favourite animal?
·        What group is it in?
·        How do you know?   e.g. it has feathers, it has fins and gills

Print and cut out the animal pictures and sorting sheet.  First, ask children to suggest different ways to sort the animals, e.g. has fur/ doesn’t have fur, lays eggs/gives birth to live young, lives on land/in water/both etc and sort them into these simple groups.

Now ask them to sort them into the five main groups and stick the pictures in the boxes on the recording sheet.  If you do not have access to a printer, children could draw animals to go into each of the five groups, or do the activity verbally.

Geography

Can you create a picture map of a fantasy woodland?

Ask children to think about the features a fantasy woodland might have, such as fairy doors, tree houses, rope ladders, fairy bridges, toadstool circles, dens etc.  Draw a simple picture map of an imaginary fantasy woodland.  Also include natural and man-made features such as evergreen and deciduous trees, paths, grassy areas, a stream, gates, fences.  Create a simple key to show what each symbol on the map represents.

As an extension of this activity, children could make their fantasy woodland using natural materials.

Computing - Internet Safety

Can you learn about staying safe on the internet?

and select Home Activity Pack 1.  This will give you two activities about staying safe online, including a link to a short, age-appropriate video (watch Episode 2 - Sharing pictures).

Daily Tasks

Phonics - using Letters and Sounds daily live phonics lessons.  Sessions take place Monday-Friday at 10.30am for Year 1 and at 11am for children who may need a little extra help with their sounds and blending.

Reading - a book/comic/Bug Club to develop reading skills.  We will allocate extra books on Bug Club when we notice you are getting low, or you can let us know when you email us.
