Weekly News 28.02.20

Welcome back to a new half term.

This week, we have celebrated the fact that our school is 50 years old by learning about life in the 1970s.  We looked at pictures of the old school building and pictures of the children walking across to the new school building in the snow!  We saw pictures of televisions, phones, toys and home in the 1970s, listened to some 1970 music and learnt a 1970 dance called 'The Hustle'.

In Maths this week we have been revising one more and one less than numbers up to 100!  Later in the week we learnt about comparing numbers using the 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equals' symbols. We thought about the symbols as a crocodiles mouth and said he likes to eat the bigger numbers.  We watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Efzu2slaI

In English, we read about how Claude stopped a robber from stealing a statue from the art gallery.  We then planned and wrote newspaper reports about the attempted robbery, using catchy headlines, such as:

Claude Saves the Day.
Dog Saves the Golden Statue.

In DT, we made 2D moving pictures using sliders and levers to make a bird fly in the sky and a car drive along the road.

In Computing, we have been learning about algorithms and we got to program the Bee Bots to move around the mats to different destinations.  Some of us were even able to program multiple instructions at once and move around obstacles on the mat.

Reminders and Notes
  • Home Learning books which were handed in are coming home tonight with a new set of tasks stuck in them.  We hope you enjoy doing these with your children.
  • Spellings for next week are:   nine,  ten,  eleven,  twelve
  • Spelling reports from last half term have also come out this week and with it is a reminder of your child's Education City login.  Please make sure that you use this resource.  There are some additional homework activities on the sheet using this that you may like to try with your children.
  • Thank you for all your efforts in putting together 70s inspired outfits.  Everybody looks fantastic!
Thank you and have a lovely weekend.

Weekly News 14.2.20

We have had a lovely end to what has been a busy and successful half term. The children are making lots of progress and should be very proud of the work they are producing.

This week in Maths we have been learning about how to make numbers to 50. We looked at the 2-digit numbers and worked out how many tens and ones the number had.
For example:
43 has 4 tens and 3 ones,
43 = 40 + 3
We used Numicon, Base 10 equipment and bead strings to make the numbers.

In English, we learnt that a statue was stolen from the art gallery in our book Claude in the City. We acted out the robbery scene and wrote thought bubbles before making a wanted poster at the end of the week.

In Art, we finished our Lowry pictures by using water colour paints. The children were very careful at mixing the right amount of water and had a little test sheet to try out their colours before using it on their picture. They then used charcoal to draw matchstick figures.

We will not be setting any new spellings to learn over the half term holiday. However, if you get the opportunity please do revisit the spellings of all Phase 2 - 5 tricky words (stuck in the back of your child's reading record) as they can often be forgotten and need reinforcing.

Your child is bringing home a reading challenge grid today. This is an optional challenge that a few local schools are doing over the next 3 weeks. There are 20 book-related activities to complete and each one needs to be signed by an adult. The completed grid needs to be returned to school by Thursday 5th March to be in with chance to win a book voucher.

Have a lovely half term,
From the year 1 team :)

Weekly News 7.2.20

It has been a busy week of visits and visitors.

Both Caterpillars and Ladybirds Class had a lovely time at Easton College on our Multiskills trip. We took part in various games and activities to practise many different sporting skills such as jumping, throwing, running, co-ordination and teamwork. We were VERY impressed with the children's behaviour and sportsmanship; they showed excellent resilience and cheered on children from other schools.

In English this week we found out that Claude (the character in our story) visited an art gallery. Our role play area is now an art gallery so we wrote persuasive sentences to encourage people to come and visit it. We used the conjunctions 'and' and 'because' to give more information and reasons. Some children used adjectives to entice people such as 'precious' and 'famous'. We then chose our best sentence to write up neatly, using pre-cursive handwriting if we could, and made a group poster.

In Maths this week we celebrated 'Number Day' on Friday by learning about numbers to 50. We counted forwards and backwards, sang songs, and practised recognition. It was nice to see everyone's Number Day costumes.

In Computing this week we started learning about algorithms. Algorithms are instructions given to a computer. We made a simple lego model and took photos of each stage. We then gave these pictures, the algorithm, to other children to see if they could follow it.

In Art this week we looked at the famous artist L.S.Lowry's work. He was famous for his industrial city paintings. We have begun creating our own Lowry piece by sketching a city scene. Many children enjoyed using perspective to draw smaller buildings in the distance.

On Thursday the whole school had a visit from a man called Simon. He came as part of our 'Gr8 as U R' scheme. Simon is paralysed from the waist down and has a special, robotic walking device that he wears to help to walk. He has walked marathons and beaten a Guinness World Record title. It was an incredibly inspirational talk/visit and clearly gave us all the message that there is no such thing as 'I Can't'. As a school we will now be completing our Gr8 as U R 'CanDo' challenge.

Notices:
- Please can you bring a plain black sock to our Internet Safety Café next week ready to make a sock puppet. We will bring some spares just in case.
- Spellings next week are: five, six, seven, eight
