On Monday we had special visitor who gave us another memorable experience for our Moon Zoom topic. We had Dr
Mandy Hartley in from The Little Story Telling Company who put on an
interactive space themed story experience for year 1. Her friend Ruff also came to help. Once again we blasted off
into space in search of a new planet. Ruff sent the drone out onto the planet
to check that it was ok for us to leave the rocket. We all explored together,
using binoculars, to see what we could spot on this very unusual planet. Coloured
scarfs were shared out and children were chosen to dress as aliens.
Unfortunately, the green haired aliens were glowing in the dark. A predator
soon game along and killed them! The white-haired aliens caught a cold, that was
the end of them too! A new breed of aliens had been created that could
withstand loud music, coughs and colds and predators. They were well adapted to
their planet with long noses to reach the food, dark hair and a good immune
system.

Music and Movement
We had a very exciting day on Wednesday when Miss Helen came in to do a space themed Music and Movement workshop. The children danced to space music and went on a journey through space. They practised taking off and flying in rockets. They were then given silver foil sheets to act as satellites and coloured lights to dance with. We then sat in a circle and practiced orbiting planets around the sun.

UFO crash landing!
Wow, what an exciting start to our Moon Zoom topic, the children found out that a UFO had been seen flying over our school early on Monday Morning. The teachers had seen it and heard a buzzing noise before they heard it crash on the field. The children went to investigate and thought it might be a satellite or part of a spaceship. They interviewed the teachers and wrote newspaper reports about what had happened. They are all so excited to learn about space. We have also started to make splat paintings with tea bags, paint and black paper for the back drop of our new space station role play. Photo coming soon!

Having fun with our new small world christmas present!
We had a great surprise on the last day of term when Father Christmas arrived and brought us some presents. It was a beautiful wooden small world with fairies and elves. He must have known we had been doing an Enchanted Woodland topic! We also got some super hero figures to use with the wooden base. (I wonder if he knows we might do that topic later in the year.)
The children had great fun playing with it today.

Reading for pleasure
We have had great fun reading and sharing our favourite books over the last few weeks at our book club. This has helped the children understand the importance of reading for pleasure which has been a school focus this half term. Our Reading Champion who comes in to hear the children read each week also talked to the children about the importance of reading and why she loves it so much.

Ho Ho Ho!
We had a very exciting start to the week when we arrived on Monday. There were snowy footprints on the carpet and the children noticed a letter. It was from Father Christmas! So the children did some wonderful writing and wrote letters back to him letting him know what they would like for Christmas. He told us he will see us at the Christmas Fayre!

Enchanted Woodland
Caterpillar class have been loving their latest topic of 'The Enchanted Woodland.' We had an afternoon outside helped to make a bug hotel for our new sensory garden with Tim the ranger who has been building the new garden. The children collected twigs, leaves, sticks, feathers and fir cones from the field and woodland areas and then pushed them carefully into the pallet structure.
We have also had lots of fun designing and making enchanted story boxes in Design and Technology. The children were asked to try and include a moving part and some enchanted features in their design brief. They also used these to help them write some fantastic enchanted stories.
