Weekly News

On Tuesday we reread our Power of Reading Book - Where the Wild Things are. 

We looked at particular images from the book and had a go at becoming characters and scenary. We also thought about what each character might be thinking or doing. 

"I am a Wild Thing and I am thinking that I will eat you up!"

"I am the boat and I am gently rocking in the sea."

As part of a daily activity, we learnt about QR codes and how to use them to find information. We went on a hunt to find the 12 codes which revealed 12 words to write.

In maths this week, we have been learning about dividing by sharing into equal groups. We then had a go at drawing our own equal groups in our maths books.

On Friday, we had a yucky discovery!

Miss Shipp had collected some dinosaur poo!

We dissected the poo to discover if the dinosaur was a herbivore, omnivore or carnivore. We also thought about which dinosaur might have pooed the poo!

Home Learning Books will be coming home on Monday.

The children will have brought home their letter regarding sports day, the team they are in and their starting point.

Weekly News w/c 29.04.19

Firstly, a big thank you to all the Mums who gave up their time to come on our Jurassic Journey trip on Tuesday - without your support, we could not run trips like this.  The children really enjoyed digging for fossils with the Professor and touring around the centre looking at the dinosaur models and learning all about them.  They particularly enjoyed meeting Tabitha, the T-rex!

The Mums who came also commented on how well the children behaved and were impressed at how they looked after each other, particularly when it was a little scary!  Well done Caterpillars!

In maths, we have continued our work on multiplication and arrays and looked at the link between multiplication and repeated addition, e.g. 5 x 4 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5. 

For English, we read the whole of our Power of Reading book, Where the Wild Things Are, and acted in the role of Max.  We particularly enjoyed acting out the 'wild rumpus'!  Continuing the theme of fantasy settings, we have today created group fantasy dioramas using a variety of different craft materials.  We had great fun agreeing on the setting and worked really well collaboratively to create our eye-catching dioramas.  We then created a bank of descriptive phrases about our fantasy setting that we will be able to use later on in our writing.

Reminders
Children should bring their book bags with them to school every day.
Spelling books need to be in book bags on a Friday to enable new words to be stuck in the books.

Weekly News w/c 22.04.19

We have started our new Power of Reading mystery book this week.  First, we looked at an unusual image showing a bedroom that was transforming into an interesting looking forest!  We wrote thought bubbles to show what we thought the character was thinking.

Then we described a second image using exciting adjectives and similes and had some very aspirational writing.

In maths, we have started to learn about multiplication.  We have been making arrays with cubes and drawing arrays to help us solve problems such as, 2 x 5, 5 x 9 and  10 x 3.

In science, we have started learning about light and shadows.  We investigated how Dippy the Dinosaur's shadow changed during the day by marking and measuring it.

We found that the shadow got shorter as the day went on and moved round to the right.

We also had fun seeing what different shadow shapes we could create using our bodies.  We made some scary looking creatures, including one with 6 arms!

Next week, we are looking forward to our trip to Jurassic Journey.  The trip will take place entirely within the normal school day.  The children will need to wear school uniform and bring a packed lunch and water bottle with them.  Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to come with us.

Weekly News w/c 01.04.19

This week in maths, we have been learning about weight.  On Wednesday, we used balance scales to weigh out equal quantities of the ingredients we needed to make cupcakes.  We put 2 eggs on one side of the scales, then one at a time, measured an equal quantity of sugar, flour and butter.  We mixed them together, baked them and iced them.  As a special treat, we shared them with our buddies in Year 3 and enjoyed chatting and reading with them while we ate.

In English, we finished our latest Power of Reading book, Beegu, by writing a short book review.  We all enjoyed the book and were able to pick our favourite part and explain why we liked it.

The school has subscribed to Bug Club, which is a fantastic resource for the children to use.  The children’s log in details have been stuck into their reading record books for you to use.  The website is suitable for computers and iPads and can be accessed via the following link:

Maths Cafe 02.04.19

Thank you to all the grown-ups who came to our Year 1 maths cafe this morning.  We hope that you enjoyed doing the workout and plate lacing activity with your child/grandchild.

Sorry for the technical difficulties we experienced.  We had intended to show the workout video on the big screen, but unfortunately the computer hadn't read the script for the morning!  If you want to try it again with the video then google 'Jack Hartman workout and count' and the children will be happy to help you!

Weekly News w/c 25.03.19

This week, we did a hot seating activity for our English on Monday.  We worked with a partner to write questions that we would like to ask Beegu, the alien in our story.  We took it in turns to take on the role of Beegu and answer the questions as we thought she might do.

In our second English lesson, we typed emails to Beegu using the laptops.  This is the first time we have used these, so there was a lot of new learning taking place in addition to using our writing skills.

For our maths, we have continued measuring.  We worked in our colour groups to measure the court on the playground using non standard and standard units.  We used things like our feet or our bodies to measure, but agreed these were not as accurate as using metres and centimetres.

It was lovely to see so many of the children at the disco tonight showing off their wonderful moves.  Congratulations to all of those who won prizes, including Elliot, Theo, Jamie and Darcie.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday at 9am for our maths cafe.

Weekly News w/c 18.03.19

On Monday, we wrote descriptions of Beegu's friend that we had made out of clay last week.  We challenged ourselves to add the conjunctions 'because' and 'and' to make our sentences longer and add more information.

On Tuesday, we wrote about Beegu herself using repetition and we even tried adding a simile or two to make our writing even better.

In maths we have continued our measuring topic.  We investigated some of the crash landing materials to find out how big they were.  We have learnt how to measure in non-standard units using objects such as cubes and lolly sticks and many of us challenged ourselves to use a ruler to measure in centimetres.

On Friday, we enjoyed sharing our home learning activities in our colour groups.  We have brought our books home again today so that we can complete the final tasks ready for the last week of term.

Finally, we have been working hard to learn our lines, songs and Beegu's story for this afternoon's assembly.  We hope that you enjoyed finding out about our Moon Zoom topic and would like to thank you all for coming to support us.  We are sure you'll agree the children were amazing! 

Some children did not remember their spelling books today, so just in case you need them, the words tgo practise this week are:
