Weekly News w/c 11.02.19

Another busy week - this seems to be a common theme!

On Tuesday, we conducted a science experiment to find out how long it took to bake a perfect roll.  We mixed batches of dough, shaped them into rolls, left them to prove and cooked them for different lengths of time.  We found that the best rolls were the ones baked for 15 minutes.

Last week, we learnt that the Great Fire of London started in a bakery on Pudding Lane.  It spread quickly as it was very windy and the houses were close together and mostly built of wood and straw.  We looked at what the houses were like in 1666 and created our own models using the cardboard boxes that you have been saving for us!  They were very impressive!

We took our houses outside and made our own mini Pudding Lane.  Then, as a surprise for the children, the Fire Brigade arrived.  They set light to the houses to show how the fire spread and some of the children made chains to pass water along as they would have done in 1666.  Thankfully, this fire was put out fairly quickly, although sadly none of our lovely houses survived.

We then went inside with the fire fighters and learnt a little bit about fire safety.  We found out that if our clothes were on fire, we should
STOP, DROP and ROLL!

This has been a really exciting ending to our Bright Lights, Big City topic.  Tomorrow, we will have a crafty treat linked to our mystery book for children who have completed all of our writing challenge tasks.
